Vinayak Chaturthi or Ganesh Chaturthi is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing period of moon). It is said that Lord Ganesha was born on a fourth day (chaturthi) bright fortnight in month of Magh as per Hindu calendar. Since, then a link has been associated between Ganesha and chaturthi. The cutest and most adorable Indian God, Ganesha is been worshipped in Maharashtra on a Grand celebration also in other parts of country like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Goa.

Linga Purana says Ganesha was discovered by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati at the request of Devas for being a Vighnaharta in the path of Rakshas (Devils) and also to help the Devas to achieve the fruits of their hard work. Ganesha is worshipped during every festival, occasions and also before people undertake a journey or embark upon a new project. One can find Ganesha in most of the Hindu houses in Maharashtra, he is being worshipped for 1,3, 5, 7, or 11 days and the statue is being immersed in water by taking out a big procession with people singing and dancing on streets. During the puja rituals Ganesha is being offered his favourite Modak Laddos, with various other offerings like flowers, durva (each bunch consisting 21 strands, also the number of modaks are same). The evening and morning worshipping ends with singing the Aarti, bhajans in honor of Ganesha.
History has another story of celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra. It’s said that the Ganesh Chaturthi festival was initiated by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, to promote nationalism and culture. And since then it is continued till date. Similar reference to the history states that Lord Ganpati was the diety of Peshwas and they used to celebrate this festival on large affairs. The occasion came to a hault around 1857, and then came Lokmanya Tilak, social reformer, freedom fighter, an Indian nationalist. Tilak brought back the tradition of Ganesh chaturthi by reshapping the annual Ganpati festival to a grand public event from private family celebrations. Public celebrations of Ganpati festival are hugely popular especially in Maharashtra. Funds are being collected from Local citizens to businessman for the Pandal decoration, Ganpati Idol, Prasad and other stuffs. Cultural activities are part of this occasion like singing, dancing, orchestra, and community activities like blood donation camp, charity for the poor, free medical check up and more.
